From a Seed of Idea
Movie Review: Inception

"An Instance of Beginning"
That's how the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word INCEPTION.
INCEPTION
Have you experienced waking up from a dream then realizing that you're still in a dream? Dream within a dream — that's what the movie, Inception, intensively showed.
Honestly, like what I heard from the others who have seen the movie, I couldn't make a thing for the first fifteen minutes of the movie. The start of the film happened so fast that you'd only start to understand what's behind it as the movie progresses. This movie is so good that I decided to create this movie review!
I know that this is kind of late but SPOILER ALERT: This is an attempt to explain the whole plot of the movie and what it was all about.
I will not go much into details with what the scenes were but with what the whole idea behind it instead. First, in Cobb's (DiCaprio) world, they can infiltrate dreams. They can sleep and dream and know that they are dreaming. In our world, it's called LUCID DREAMING. The difference is that other can go inside your dream and alter it. That's when Inception can happen. Inception is the process of "PLANTING" an idea to the subject's mind so that when he wakes up, that idea will still be carried over. What's the danger? Take the case of Dominic Cobb's (Leonardo DiCaprio) wife, Mallory (Marion Cotillard). I'll explain later.
From the way it was shown, Cobb was a fugitive. Being a suspect for his wife's death, he was forced to leave his country, leaving his children behind. A businessman, Saito (Ken Watanabe), hires him for a job in exchange for his freedom. Using his connections, he deals with Cobb promising that if he succeeds, he'll be free to walk back in his country again. The crime? INCEPTION. The scene of the crime? Robert Micheal Fischer's (Cillian Murphy) MIND, the MARK. Fischer is the heir of Saito's rival company. Being a threat to his company, he wants Fischer to break his father's company thus weakening it against his.
The preparation then took place. Dominic Cobb works as an EXTRACTOR. He can go into the subject's dream and get information that the subject would be unwilling to divulge consciously. Together with his POINT MAN, Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), they started forming their team of infiltrators. They first recruited Eames (Tom Hardy), a FORGER. He can change his appearance inside dreams giving him the advantage of interacting nearer the subject. Sedatives are used to induce dreams. That's when Yusuf (Dileep Rao), came into the picture. A CHEMIST who formulated a type of sedative so powerful that it'll be harder for the dreamer to wake up. Also, his sedatives can induce deeper sleep or what they call LEVELS. And finally, a dream cannot just be a dream without someone designing it. Previously, he already had one, Nash (Lukas Haas), but replaced it. He went to his mentor, Miles (Michael Caine), to look for an ARCHITECT explaining that what Saito was offering is his freedom. Convinced, he recommended a young girl named Ariadne (Page Ellen). It was her who staged all the Dream Level they went to.
It was Ariadne who played as the Audience (as one of the reviewers I've read put it). The whole concept was explained to her making us understand the idea as well. This is actually the point when audiences start to understand the movie.
* The first concept in a dream, when you try recalling how you get to that certain moment, you wouldn't remember how.
* Second, if you're inside your subject's dream, you can change its architecture. Rule of thumb: never design the dream with an actual place from the real world, it can confuse you which is reality and a dream. You can put things from the real world like a lamp post or a telephone booth but not the entire place.
* Third, the people inside the subject's dream are his projections. Meaning, it's what's in his head and how his mind is programmed; like mental defenses. Simply put, it's like his body's white blood cells which combat invaders. Projections are also the indicators if the subject realized that his dream is trespassed. If projections started to look at you suspiciously, then that means the subject knows you're not from his dreams.
* Fourth, dreams have levels. The time inside the dream is different from the time in the real world. For instance, five minutes in the real world is equivalent to an hour in the first dream. I don't know about this part but if I remember it correctly, ten minutes is equivalent to another hour in the third level of dream.
* Fifth, there's a level of dreaming call the LIMBO where a dreamer can be stuck and not being able to wake up, possible forever. Little is known about that level.
* Sixth, KICKS are used to forcibly wake a dreamer up. A Kick happens when our body suddenly falls while we're sleeping causing us to wake up. The only disadvantage on relying on Kicks is that when your in a deeper level of dreaming and your body is in an abysmal free-fall, you won't wake up since you wouldn't be hitting the ground. You can improvise a Kick though; you can get yourself killed as an alternative.
* Seventh, gravity changes according to the upper level of dream where you were. Gravity is dependent on our position while we are asleep. This is shown when Arthur was in the hotel. As their van spins in the upper level of their dream, the gravity shifts accordingly as well. And when the van was about to fall off the river, everything was also in free fall. This does not affect the lower of dreams though.
* And lastly, make use of a TOTEM. As for Cobb, he uses his wife's spinning top. Arthur uses a dice, and Ariadne uses a chess piece. What is it for and how does it work? A TOTEM could be anything that only you should know what it is. It's your "REALITY CHECK" as I put it. For instance, you wake up and are kind of confuse if you're in another dream or in the real world already. You can then use your totem. Cobb spins his spinning top after waking up. If it topples over after some time, that means his back to reality. Otherwise, it'll just continuously spin.
Before their mission started, Ariadne finds out about Cobb's past and convinces him to let go of the guilt feeling, saying that it's too dangerous for the others bringing his own projections to Fischer's dream. The main antagonist of the movie was Cobb’s projection, Mal.
The infiltration started when they boarded a plane going to L.A.. Cobb drugs Fischer causing him to sleep and them following him in his dreams. The First Level was where the first extraction took place. Not anticipating what would happen, they didn’t know that Fischer’s mind was trained to protect itself from Extractors. It was raining when they abducted him and forced him to tell them the combination of his father’s vault. Eames changes himself to Peter Browning (Tom Berenger), Fischer’s godfather, pretending to be abducted as well. Browning convinces him to tell them what they want but he insists he knows nothing until they were in point-gun with the kidnappers. Fischer tells them a series of numbers. Being trained, his projections were military skilled making it difficult for the team’s mission; Saito was injured because of this. Cobb’s projections started to come in as well in the form of a runaway train. This was also the part where they learned the possibility of being stuck in Limbo instead of waking up. Pushing through with the original plan, they then went deeper to Fischer’s Second Level of dreaming. Yusuf stayed behind protecting their bodies in the van while running away from Fischer’s projections. He was left with one hour to look after their bodies before giving them the Kick. In this level, the Kick would be when the van falls off the river.
They used a hotel as their second stage. Cobb posing as a stranger, who offers help, tells Fischer that the Extraction was planned by his godfather. He tells him that the abduction was real and shows him that they’re now dreaming. Cobb also promises to protect his mind from the Extractor. This time, they ambushed Brown, again Eames posing as him, and went to his dreams. Cobb tells Fischer that it’s the only way for them to know what his godfather's motives were. This time, Arthur was left behind to fend for the remaining bodies while they sleep. This was the part where the concept of gravity was shown. Arthur dealing with Fischer’s projection, this was the scene where the hotel corridor spins; shifting gravity in connection with the dream’s previous level. In this case, it’s when the van rolls over and nearly crashes. After dealing with the projection, he then puts the team into the elevator where the Kick would set in.
The Third Level happens in a snowy mountain field. This time, the mission is for Fischer to retrieve the information inside the fortress. In his belief, it’s what his father’s intentions for him and his inherited company when in fact, it’s the PLANTED IDEA. The whole INCEPTION. Still dealing with his projection, he manages to go inside the fortress while the whole team backs him up. Eames then hears Arthur’s queue in a form of a classical music, signaling him to hurry up. Saito being injured from the previous dream, later dies. While almost reaching the vault, Cobb’s projection, Mallory, intervenes, shooting Fischer instead. As a sniper outside the fortress, Cobb had difficulty shooting Mal although Ariadne tells him that she’s not “real” and just his projection. He was able to shoot her eventually but Fischer, caught between life and death in that dream, went to Limbo. Ariadne, determined to finish the mission followed him to Limbo. Cobb objected saying that he’ll find Mal down there too and won’t be able to deal with her. Ariadne said that they’ll find him and bring him back there to complete the operation. Even though there was too much risk of going deeper into dreaming, they still went into the Fourth Level down. For the Third Level, detonated bombs were their Kicks; with Eames taking charge of it.
The Limbo is where Cobb and his wife Mallory created their dreams, their life, their everything. Cobb even shared that they even grew old in it. They first saw themselves in a beach and later walked into the labyrinthine streets of Cobb’s dream world. Cobb, knowing where to find Fischer, went to their home where he finds Mallory sitting in the kitchen. Mallory convinces him to stay with him forever. Ariadne pleads that Mal is just a projection, the SHADE in his dreams, that Cobb needs to let go. It was also revealed that it was Mallory’s idea to use a totem to distinguish reality from a dream. But then, Mallory wanted them to just stay there and live forever. Cobb then confesses that it was him who discovered the idea of Inception. He planted the idea of ending the dream in his wife’s mind letting them go back to reality. This idea was planted so powerful that Mallory even confuses reality with dream; the reason why he’s guilty of his wife’s death because of it, although his wife committed suicide. Mal jumped off the building, believing that she’s still dreaming. Realizing the lack of time, Ariadne shoots Mallory, killing her and pushing Fischer off the building improvising Kicks for them to go back to the other level. Though she pleaded for him to leave, Cobb still stayed with his wife. Ariadne then jumps off the building improvising her Kick leaving Cobb behind.
Back in the Third Level, Fischer wakes up and goes inside the vault of the fortress. Inside was his dying father, Maurice Fischer (Pete Posthlethwaite). In real life, he heard his father saying that he’s a disappointment during his last breath. This time, his father signals him to open a small vault near his death bed. Fischer uses the combination code to open it revealing his father’s last will and a paper fan. This paper fan was a reminder to the younger Fischer about his youth with his father. He then realizes that his father wants him to himself and take care of the company; dividing it. This idea was the main objective of the Inception.
Just in time of the synchronized Kicks, Ariadne wakes up the Third Level from Limbo. She was then killed by the explosion of the Fortress as the Third’s Kick. She later wakes up again to the Second Level but again being killed upon hitting the shaft of the elevator as the Kick prepared by Arthur. Finally waking up inside the van plunged underwater, they were all able to escape except for Cobb and Saito. Ariadne still believed that Cobb would make it.
The scene changes to Cobbs waking up on the beach. He was then escorted by projections to a safe house where an old man resides. It was revealed that the old man was Saito who was trapped in his Limbo waiting for Cobb. He then reached for his gun and the scene changes back to the plane where Cobb and the others are all awake. Ariadne was seen holding his totem. It can be concluded that the Inception was a success with Saito fulfilling his promise upon Cobb’s arrival in Los Angeles Airport. He was a free man. He went back to his home, Miles, who happens to be his father-in-law, waited for him outside the airport. He was again in their Kitchen when he arrived; he was then able to see his children’s faces now unlike when they show as his projections. Checking if it were real, he reached for his spinning top and spun it. Distracted with his kids and his excitement to meet them, he leaves the top without knowing if it would stop or continue to spin. As the top nears to topple over, the scene cuts off leaving us to guess if he’s still dreaming or is finally back to reality.
My Verdict:
Dominic Cobb’s character was played very well by DiCaprio. Same goes with the other casts. I think no one can play Saito’s part better than Watanabe. Marion Cotillard has played an obsessively loving wife effectively. Joseph Gordon-Levit, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, and Cillian Murphy fit the role perfectly as well. Michael Caine looked familiar, he happens to be the father of Samantha in the movie film Bewitched. And Ellen Page’s character was the one I like most. I think young people could relate to her character in the movie. Partly because, it was to her whom Dominic Cobb explained the whole idea; making us understand the plot. And partly, because she’s the youngest member of the group.
The scenes were surreal. What do you expect? They’re shooting dream sequence and all. I enjoyed the part where they were sitting in a café and details were given to her about dreams. Then things started to explode and everything was in slow-motion. I also like the part when she’s training; she broke the glass and it turned up to be a hallway. And one of the most thrilling parts was when the street started to bend upward. It was just pure awesomeness!
So what can I say about the movie? Totally DREAMY! It was like I was in a REVERIE while watching it. The scenes were amazing and the whole idea was fascinating. This movie has just put itself a notch higher the international movie industry; setting a new standard of quality films and story lines. It's a must-see! I hope it wins in the Academy Awards bagging the Oscars!
